Chris Kanyon wasn’t surprised to receive a call from the WWE on Monday informing him the company was no longer interested in employing him. As Kanyon tells it, the decision was inevitable and he hasn’t been happy with the way the WWE management has treated him for quite some time.
“More than anything you want to be happy,” Kanyon told SLAM! Wrestling. “Other than the paycheck, they didn’t give me much reason to be happy.”
Kanyon’s been one of many dissatisfied wrestlers, including independent star – Brian “Spanky” Kendrick – who have been wanting to get out of their WWE contracts and go back to wrestling for independent promotions.
“I’ve been back and forth, off and on television for a while,” Kanyon said of the decision. “It was going to happen sooner or later. More sooner then later.”
“I was talking about it with Spanky for a while now,” he said. “You know the morale of the guys in the locker room has been down.”
Since October, Kanyon has been talking about getting out of his contract. He’s also been in contact with Jeff Jarrett of the NWA.
“I think Jeff’s always been high on me,” he said. “I have a lot of friends in the NWA. Disco, Raven, a lot of the guys.”
Kanyon was a part of Raven’s Flock back in their WCW days but Kanyon is mostly known for his association with Diamond Dallas Page. It was during a three tier cage match at WCW’s ‘Slamboree’ pay-per-view in 2000 that Kanyon stunned the wrestling world by taking a brutal bump off the top of the highest cage all the way down to the rampway.
Kanyon says he has many options available to him. One option other than the NWA is the chance to work with Japan’s Zero-One.
“One thing I’ve always wanted to do that I never got to do is wrestle in Japan. I’d really like to go. Spanky has been wanting me to go. We’ve become pretty close.”
Kanyon said that even though a lot of doors have opened and he’s received many phone calls from promoters, he’s not sure if wrestling is still in his future.
“Ever since I hurt the knee and the shoulder and the WWE wasn’t doing much with me I decided to get into something else.”
Kanyon works in real estate and might take this opportunity to concentrate on that instead of heading back to a ring. Kanyon says he already has some real estate deals set up.
If Kanyon does decide to go back to wrestling there is a clause in his release which states that he cannot compete for any other organization for 90 days. For now, Kanyon is going to take the opportunity to weigh his options.
“I’ve got three months to sit back and think about what I want to do. I’m just going to put my life in order now,” he said.
