This story has both good and bad news for Edge fans.
First, the good news. Edge, whose real name is Adam Copeland, won the WWF Intercontinental title from Jeff Jarrett Saturday night at a house show in Toronto, which is just a hop and a skip from his hometown of Orangeville, Ontario.
In an interview back stage with SLAM! Wrestling following his win, Edge called the win “shocking” and that he had no clue what was happening. “Full shoot, I had no idea what was going on.”
Fans in attendance were equally shocked. Originally, Jarrett was supposed face Ken Shamrock, but apparently there were transportation problems and Shamrock was not in attendance. Edge came out after Jarrett had declared himself still the champ on the house microphone. Edge had even wrestled, and won, in the night’s opening match with Christian against the Acolytes.
The match was actually pretty equal, and with Edge rolling up Jarrett for the 1-2-3. He was given the belt by the referee, and the hometown crowd went wild. But then WWF official Blackjack Lanza came out to consult with the referee and likely 99% of the crowd — including Edge — expected the title to revert back to Jarrett because ‘contracts had not been signed’ or some such baloney.
But the original referee’s decision stood, and Edge is the champion.
“I wouldn’t have another place to do it except Toronto,” said Edge, 25. “It’s cool to be able to do in front of a hometown crowd and the reaction was cool.”
And he had some family in attendance. At least he hoped so. “I’m hoping my mom didn’t leave though, because I told her that I would probably be in the first match, and to take off so I could meet her for dinner. So, I’m hoping she stayed. My fiancee is here, a bunch of uncles and cousins, but they’re always here!”
Ah, yes. The bad news. Sorry ladies, but young Mr. Copeland got engaged a little over two weeks ago to Alanah Morley, 22, the sister of Peterborough, Ontario’s Sean Morley, better known as Val Venis.
But before any wedding plans are made, Edge has a title defence Sunday night in Buffalo at the Fully Loaded pay-per-view, likely against Jarrett, and a new enemy in Gangrel, his former partner in The Brood.
“[I’m] not sure where The Brood stands, if The Brood will consist of Christian and I — I don’t know where his head is at,” said Edge. “But with Gangrel, he’s definitely decided that The Brood should be no more.”
