The similarities between pro wrestling and the strongman competitions are there to be made: both are pseudo sports, not respected by the ‘real sporting’ community; and both are full of really, really big men.

Ron Trottier of Montreal is one of the few to have walked in both lands.

He’s been to Tokyo and South Africa for international Strongman competitions, and successfully competed on the provincial circuit as well.

As far as wrestling goes, he trained with Montreal mainstay Gino Brito. Just at the wrong time.

“I came maybe a little bit too late. [Wrestling in Quebec] was dying when I came. So I really didn’t have a chance, I didn’t really have the breaks to go to a big office. But I’m still working on that, going there for a tryout,” Trottier said backstage at the International Wrestling 2000 gala in Montreal at the end of December 1999.

For part of his career, he wrestled in a tag team called The Doormen. But the other Doorman gave up the business, leaving Trottier on his own as singular ‘Doorman.’

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound Trottier only wrestles about four times a year now, and only for Jacques Rougeau Jr. and his big gala shows. On the December show, he rode a motorcycle to the ring to battle the massive King Kong Bundy. And standing beside Bundy, the former Strongman didn’t look out of place.

“The other shows [in Quebec] are really, really small shows,” he explained. “Money’s not good at all, [and] you can hurt yourself for like, $75 bucks. It’s not worth it to go there.”

So Trottier continues to harbour dreams of making the WWF or WCW while working as a technician on the CL415 water bomber for Bombardier.

Memories

I’ve met Ron a few times at Jacques Rougeau’s galas in Montreal and he’s a nice guy who I wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. We shared a laugh in 1999 when his valet for the night (“Miss Doorman”) also doubled as the intermission mascot in a big furry bear suit. For Ron, she was in a sexy mini-skirt and would quickly slip into “Youppi! the bear” after her match. Actually, I can’t say that seeing her go from Youppi! the bear back to Miss Doorman was too unpleasant, she was pretty cute. Keep wrestling Ron!
