NWA celebrates 50 years

The National Wrestling Alliance is 50 years old and is throwing a big bash to celebrate this weekend.

On Saturday, October 24th, at the Cherry Hill Hilton in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the NWA will hold a fan convention. It will run from 9 am to 7 pm, with with a break from 2 pm to 5 pm so that anyone who wants to can attend the Cauliflower Alley Club Banquet.

To top it all off, that night there will be a special 50th anniversary show with interpromotional matches.

NWA president Howard Brody is real excited about the weekend.

“Everyone is participating,” he said, referring to the many NWA-affiliated promotions and, surprisingly, the World Wrestling Federation. “It’s truly an interpromotional card.”

The list of wrestlers is pretty impressive: James E. Cornette, Abdullah the Butcher, Yokozuna, Missy Hyatt, the NWA National Champ Stevie Richards, ECW founder Tod Gordon, Public Enemy, Doug Gilbert, NWA World Champion Dan “the Beast” Severn, “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, Tiger Ali Singh & Babu, Harley Race, Killer Kowalski, and Classy Freddie Blassie.

The Cauliflower Alley Club Banquet will honour Classy Freddie Blassie, Dory Funk Jr., Danny Hodge, Harley Race, Gordon Solie and Lou Thesz. WWF announcers Jim Ross and Kevin Kelley will also be on hand.

At the evening show, the highlight is NWA champ Dan Severn defending his belt against Steven Regal, who apparently, is now a ‘Real Man’s Man.’ The WWF is sending wrestlers from its training camp for a Battle Royal. Participants include “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, Dr. Tom Prichard, Tiger Ali Singh, Giant Silva, Glen Kulka, Andrew Martin, Kurt Angle and Ted Hart.

The Tennessee Volunteerz (Reno Riggins & Steven Dunn) defend the NWA North American Tag Team titles as against the Headbangers (Mosh & Thrasher).

Barry Windham and Tully Blanchard participate in a Four Corners match for the NWA World tag titles. Their opponents are current NWA World Tag Team Champions The Border Patrol from NWA All-Star Wrestling, the Brotherhood from NWA New England (Suicide Sbraccia & Knuckles Nelson) and Team Extreme from NWA Southwest (Kit Carson & Khris Germany).

The highlight for Canadian wrestling fans will be ECCW champ Mr. Gillis facing the CWF’s E.Z. Ryder for the new NWA Canadian title.
