The Wrestling Observer is reporting that NJPW may have put Chris Charlton on an ‘indefinite hiatus’ for his on-air comments during Wrestle Dynasty.
In trying to fuel the fire, rivalry between Gabe Kidd (NJPW) and Kenny Omega (AEW) and perhaps anticipating that the crowd would booing Kenny Omega since Kidd’s chaotic, manic ways have made him a fan favourite in Japan, Charlton was on fire at times during his commentary.
When Kidd took his entrance attire off revealing his NJPW branded trunks Charlton said as the camera zoomed in on the symbol: “That is what this match is about! You just saw the answer right there on the gear of Gabe Kidd!”.
When Omega came out, Rocky Romero defended Omega saying he brought NJPW to the masses and took the promotion world-wide.
“This man is Japanese professional wrestling in my opinion. This man has represented Japanese wrestling world-wide,” said Romero stating that the match was the past versus the future.
To a viewer it seemed there would be planned dueling back-and-forth, commentary.
Charlton commented that Kidd was insulted at the insinuation that he cashes a pay check because of Kenny Omega. Romero countered with NJPW rose to such popularity because of Kenny Omega and others.
“No doubt about it and in Gabe’s mind it was grow and grow. It was take and take. As soon as we have a ‘money mark” to take away some of those talents, well then, off they go. Off goes Jay White, Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada. What have they done there that they haven’t done here?” responded Charlton referring to Tony Khan and the creation, formation of AEW.
“It goes so much deeper than that. You all have no idea,” responded Romero.
“Hey, let’s put the guns away, boys,” said Walker Stewart.
Talent appearing on Wrestle Dynasty courtesy of AEW included Kenny Omega, Dustin Rhodes, Sammy Guevara, Mercedes Moné, Brody King, The Young Bucks, Jack Perry and Ricochet.
Charlton was not part of The New Year Dash today. Neither NJPW or Charlton himself have commented publicly on the situation.
